Funky Bounce

Funky Bounce

Zapp · 1980
Recording

Recorded in Dayton, Ohio during the sessions for Zapp's debut album with Roger Troutman leading the band alongside his brothers Larry, Lester and Terry Troutman. The track featured the group's signature combination of live funk instrumentation, synthesizers and talk-box textures. Released on Zapp's self-titled debut album, the track helped define the band's futuristic funk sound at the start of the 1980s. It reinforced the influence of Roger Troutman and George Clinton's P-Funk lineage while pushing the genre toward a more electronic direction. The recording became a favorite among funk DJs and later hip-hop producers who mined Zapp's catalog for samples. Its groove and synthesizer work contributed to the blueprint for electro-funk, G-funk and modern funk revivalists.
