Turned On to You

Recorded in New York at Sigma Sound Studios and Electric Lady Studios, with Carla Bandini and Dave Wittman engineering and Roy Ayers and Edwin Birdsong handling the production and arrangements. Issued on Uno Melodic in 1980, the track was the standout cut from Ladies of the Eighties and became a club favorite on the rare groove and disco circuit. Contemporary trade coverage singled it out, and later retrospective coverage treated it as one of the album’s key songs. The song became a durable sample source and cover vehicle, appearing in records by A Tribe Called Quest, Nujabes, Johnny Jungle, Nova Casper, and Louie Vega with Lisa Fischer and Anané Vega. It remains one of the best-known Eighties Ladies recordings and a touchstone of Roy Ayers and Edwin Birdsong’s club-oriented catalog.
