Don’t It Drive You Crazy
The Pointer Sisters · 1977Recorded for the Pointer Sisters’ 1977 album Having a Party, with the group working at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles and Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco. The album credits list David Rubinson & Friends, Inc. as producer, with Fred Catero, David Rubinson, and Tim Kramer as engineers, and Reginald "Sonny" Burke handling string arrangements and conductor duties. The track appeared on a transitional Pointer Sisters album that closed out their Blue Thumb period and featured June Pointer only on the title cut. Record listings and later writeups treated it as a standout cut from the album, and WhoSampled documents it as a source track for later hip-hop sampling. Its long-term reach rests in sampling: Gang Starr built "Execution of a Chump" around it, and later records by Rakim and Tory Lanez also drew from it. That sampling history has kept the song circulating well beyond its original 1977 LP context.
