Recorded in 1990 at Firehouse Studio in Brooklyn during the Step in the Arena sessions. Guru performed the vocal, while DJ Premier produced, programmed, scratched, and mixed the track with Guru for Gang Starr Productions. Released by Chrysalis in 1990 as the first single from Step in the Arena, it reached number 5 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart. The record sharpened Gang Starr's street narrative style and helped set up the album that established the duo's classic early-1990s sound. It remains one of Gang Starr's defining early singles and a key example of DJ Premier's stripped, loop-driven production. Its cautionary street tale, video by Fab Five Freddy, and Jean-Jacques Perrey sample have kept it central to Step in the Arena retrospectives.
