Who's Gonna Take The Weight?

Who's Gonna Take The Weight?

Gang Starr · 1991
Recording

Recorded for Step in the Arena in New York City, with production by DJ Premier and The Guru. The track was cut at Calliope Productions in New York, with Lisle Leete credited as engineer and Guru on vocals. A standout from Step in the Arena, it helped establish Gang Starr's stark, jazz-leaning East Coast sound and became one of the album's signature songs in later retrospectives. It is commonly grouped with the record's defining cuts, alongside tracks such as "Just to Get a Rep" and "Check the Technique." The song stayed in circulation well beyond its original release and was included on DJ Premier's The Classics 104.1 station soundtrack in Grand Theft Auto IV. That placement kept one of Gang Starr's best-known tracks in front of a new audience.
