Blue Lines
Massive Attack · 1991The track was recorded for Massive Attack debut album Blue Lines at Coach House Studios in Bristol with Robert Del Naja, Grant Marshall, Andrew Vowles and Tricky among the core collaborators. Massive Attack produced the recording with Jonny Dollar, building it from slow breakbeats, bass and rap vocals tied to the Wild Bunch sound system lineage. Released on Blue Lines in 1991, it served as the album title track and helped define Massive Attack early Bristol sound. Though not issued as a charting single, it formed part of the record that established the group as a major force in British club and electronic music. It remains a key album cut from Blue Lines and a concise statement of the group early fusion of hip hop, dub, soul and sound system culture. The track continues to represent the foundation of Massive Attack style before their later, darker studio records.
