Unfinished Sympathy
Massive Attack · 1991Massive Attack developed “Unfinished Sympathy” with Shara Nelson and Jonny Dollar during the Blue Lines sessions at Coach House Studio in Bristol, after Nelson had begun the song under the working title “Kiss and Tell.” The string section was arranged and conducted by Wil Malone and recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, with the group and Dollar producing the track. Released in 1991 as the second single from Blue Lines, it became Massive Attack’s first major UK hit and reached number 13 on the Official Singles Chart. Its combination of programmed rhythm, Nelson’s lead vocal and a full orchestral arrangement made it a defining early statement for the Bristol sound. The track remains Massive Attack’s signature single and one of the most acclaimed British records of the early 1990s. Its one-shot Los Angeles video, Shara Nelson vocal and orchestral build have kept it central to later histories of UK electronic pop.
