Black Sheep · 1991Recording
Recorded during the November 1990 to August 1991 sessions for A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing at Calliope Studios in New York. Andres Titus and William McLean wrote, arranged, produced, and mixed the track, with Lisle Leete engineering the album sessions. Released by Mercury in 1991 as Black Sheep's breakthrough single, it reached number 2 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart. The record introduced the duo's witty Native Tongues style ahead of the wider success of A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing. It remains one of Black Sheep's key early singles and a defining introduction to Dres and Mista Lawnge's satirical approach. Its sample-based production and punchline-heavy verses keep it central to the group's debut-era reputation.
