The Creator

The track appeared on Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth’s 1991 debut EP All Souled Out, which was recorded at Greene St. Recording in New York City and produced by Pete Rock. It was issued as the EP’s lead single and, on the EP, stands as Pete Rock’s solo vocal track. It introduced the duo in 1991 and was singled out at release as the EP’s only solo Pete Rock performance, helping define the pair’s early identity. The EP was met with rave reviews and the single became a modest hit. The track remained the duo’s signature early single and later resurfaced in the opening credits of the 2015 film The Night Before. It also continued to appear on retrospective releases and reissues, keeping it in circulation for new listeners.
