Recording

Recorded in 1974 for the album Blow It Out, the track featured saxophonist Tom Scott leading the L.A. Express during a period when jazz musicians were increasingly incorporating funk and fusion influences. The session combined Scott's distinctive saxophone work with a rhythm section rooted in contemporary funk and jazz-rock. The recording became one of the standout tracks from Blow It Out and showcased Scott's ability to bridge jazz improvisation with accessible funk grooves. It helped establish him as a leading figure in 1970s jazz-funk and studio-session culture. The track became highly influential in hip-hop through its memorable opening saxophone phrase and rhythm section, making it a frequent source for sampling. It remains one of Tom Scott's best-known recordings and a cornerstone of the jazz-funk canon.
