Gwen McCrae · 1974
Recording

It was recorded for Gwen McCrae’s 1974 self-titled Cat album, issued out of the Miami TK/Cat production orbit. Steve Alaimo is credited as producer on the original release. The track appeared as a deep album cut from McCrae’s early Cat period rather than as a mainstream chart single. It became one of the record’s most admired slow-burn soul performances and a favorite among DJs and rare-groove listeners. The song has had a long afterlife through hip-hop and dance music sampling, with WhoSampled listing it as sampled in more than 50 songs. It remains one of McCrae’s most recognizable recordings outside her biggest chart hits.
