Rockin’ Chair
Gwen McCrae · 1974Recorded in Miami for Cat Records, with George McCrae on backing vocals and the Miami studio circle that included Steve Alaimo, Willie Clarke, and Clarence Reid on the original release. The record emerged from the same TK/Cat scene that had turned George McCrae’s “Rock Your Baby” into a hit the year before. Released in 1975, it was Gwen McCrae’s breakthrough solo single and an answer record to George McCrae’s “Rock Your Baby.” It reached No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart and No. 9 on the Hot 100, making it a major crossover hit. “Rockin’ Chair” remained Gwen McCrae’s signature song and a defining Miami soul/disco recording. It continued to circulate through compilation culture and sample-minded rare-groove listening, keeping McCrae’s name central to 1970s soul histories.
