The Wild Magnolias · 1974Recorded in 1973 at Studio in the Country in Bogalusa, Louisiana, with the Wild Magnolias backed by the New Orleans Project, including Willie Tee on keyboards and Snooks Eaglin on guitar. Philippe Rault produced the session, and Willie Tee handled the arrangements. The track was part of the group’s self-titled 1974 debut, one of the landmark New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian funk records of the era. It captured the group’s communal chant style in a large-scale studio setting and became one of the album’s defining cuts. The song later gained lasting recognition as a sample source and a staple of breakbeat and rare-groove collections. Its groove and chant structure helped keep the Wild Magnolias visible in hip-hop and funk-circulation culture long after release.
