Dyin' to Be Dancin'

Empress · 1981
Recording

Recorded in 1981 for Prelude Records by Empress, with production by Raymond Reid and William Anderson and a mix by François Kevorkian. The track came out of the New York club-dance scene that surrounded Prelude's twelve-inch output. The single became a club record, reaching the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play top 10. Contemporary trade coverage singled out its polished street-funk arrangement and strong mix for dance floors. The track has remained a post-disco favorite and has been sampled by later artists, including Redman and Todd Terry. It still appears on dance compilations and mix sets as a classic Prelude-era record.
