Street Life
Randy Crawford · 1981Recording
Randy Crawford re-recorded Street Life in 1981 for the soundtrack to Burt Reynolds's film Sharky's Machine. The song was written by Joe Sample and Will Jennings, with Snuff Garrett producing the soundtrack version and Al Capps arranging and conducting it. The 1981 edit gave Crawford's signature performance a new solo soundtrack setting after the Crusaders' 1979 hit version. It became closely associated with Sharky's Machine and later gained renewed visibility through Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown. Street Life remained Crawford's defining recording in popular culture through film use, compilations, and later sampling. The edit kept the song's cinematic identity distinct from the original Crusaders album version.
