Flashlight
Parliament · 1978Recorded in 1977 for Parliament’s Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome sessions, with George Clinton producing and the album sessions split between United Sound Systems in Detroit and Hollywood Sound in Hollywood. The track was issued as the album’s second single in 1978. The single became Parliament’s first No. 1 R&B hit and gave the P-Funk camp a major pop crossover, reaching No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. It became one of the group’s defining late-1970s singles and one of Casablanca’s signature funk releases. "Flash Light" remains one of Parliament’s best-known songs, preserved through constant inclusion on funk compilations and wide recognition of its bass-driven hook. Its status as a foundational P-Funk anthem has kept it in rotation across funk, hip-hop, and classic soul culture.
