Mothership Connection (Star Child)
Parliament · 1975Recorded in 1975 during sessions for Parliament's fourth studio album Mothership Connection at United Sound Studios in Detroit and Hollywood Sound in California, the track featured George Clinton on vocals, Bootsy Collins on bass, Bernie Worrell on keyboards, Garry Shider and Glen Goins on guitars, and members of the Horny Horns including Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker. Produced by George Clinton, the composition was written by Clinton, Collins and Worrell, with arrangements credited to the three writers and Fred Wesley. Released on Casablanca Records in December 1975, Mothership Connection (Star Child) introduced George Clinton's extraterrestrial alter ego Star Child and developed the Afrofuturist mythology central to Parliament's identity. Issued as a single in 1976, it reached number 26 on Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart, combining science-fiction imagery, gospel references and elaborate ensemble arrangements. Mothership Connection (Star Child) became one of Parliament's defining recordings, establishing characters and themes that shaped subsequent Parliament-Funkadelic albums and live performances. Its influence extended into hip-hop through sampling and reinterpretation, while its science-fiction imagery and celebration of Black cultural identity contributed to its enduring significance in Afrofuturist music.
