West Coast Poplock

Ronnie Hudson · 1982
Recording

Recorded in 1982 at KSR Recording Studio in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, with Ronnie Hudson and the Street People. The release was issued on Birdie. The track served as an upbeat West Coast dance anthem at a moment when Compton references were still rare in popular music, and it quickly became part of Southern California radio culture. Its hook and title were later echoed in major West Coast hip-hop, most notably in Dr. Dre and 2Pac’s “California Love,” and the song also appears on the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas soundtrack.
