Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang

Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang

Dr. Dre feat. Snoop Dogg · 1993
Recording

Recorded in 1992 at Death Row in Los Angeles, California during sessions for The Chronic, with Snoop Doggy Dogg as the featured vocalist and Dr. Dre handling the production. The song began as a beat Dre was developing for the album, then became Snoop’s breakout showcase after Dre brought him into the project. Released as the first single from The Chronic on January 19, 1993, it pushed Death Row’s West Coast sound into the mainstream and became the blueprint for G-funk. It reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart, confirming Dre and Snoop as major pop crossover forces. The track remains one of the defining records of 1990s hip-hop, later recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame among the songs that shaped rock and roll and by Rolling Stone as one of the greatest songs of all time. Its hook, production style, and Dre-Snoop pairing became a lasting template for West Coast rap.
