I Want'a Do Something Freaky To You

Leon Haywood · 1975
Recording

Leon Haywood recorded the track in 1975 for his album Come and Get Yourself Some, with Haywood credited as producer and co-ordinating the arrangements. The released record also credits Gene Page for string work and James Mitchell as co-arranger, with John Mills mixing and Stan Ross engineering. The single became Leon Haywood’s biggest hit, reaching No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 7 on the Billboard R&B chart. It stood out as a defining mid-1970s soul-funk crossover record and the signature song from Come and Get Yourself Some. The track became a major source for later hip-hop and R&B sampling, most famously in Dr. Dre’s “Nuthin’ but a 'G' Thang.” Its groove and bass line have kept it in circulation through samples, covers, and frequent reissue play.
