We Want The Funk
Parliament · 1976Recorded in 1975 during the Mothership Connection sessions at United Sound in Detroit and Hollywood Sound in Hollywood, with Parliament led by George Clinton and the P-Funk band that included Bootsy Collins and Jerome Brailey. It was issued as the second single from Mothership Connection under the title “Tear the Roof off the Sucker (Give Up the Funk).” The track became Parliament’s biggest crossover single, turning the group’s call-and-response chant into one of funk’s most recognizable anthems. It reached No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 5 on the Hot Soul Singles chart, helping establish Parliament as a major force beyond the R&B market. The song remains a defining P-Funk statement and a staple of later funk and hip-hop sampling culture. Its chorus and title phrase have been repeatedly referenced and interpolated by later artists, keeping it in constant circulation well beyond its original release era.
