We Are I.E.
Lennie De Ice · 1991Lenworth Green cut the original version in 1988–1989 in a home studio in his flat on the Beaumont estate in Leyton, East London. He built the track with a sampler, Atari ST and Cubase, drawing on advice from Uncle 22 and playing it to the Reel 2 Reel/De Underground crew, including Long John Aymer, Michael Aymer, Randall, Coolhand Flex and A-Sides. Released in 1991 on the Reel 2 Reel Productions / I.E. Records EP, it captured the post-acid rave shift toward breakbeat pressure, reggae bass and sound-system energy. It quickly became a touchstone in the early hardcore scene and was widely treated as a founding jungle record. The track remains one of the most cited precursors to jungle and drum & bass, with later DJs, producers and critics repeatedly treating it as a zero point for the style. It has been remixed, revived and reissued across later dance scenes, keeping it in circulation well beyond its original rave moment.
