Dance O'er the Border
The Beta Band · 1999Recorded during the 1999 sessions for The Beta Band, with Steve Mason, John Maclean, Richard Greentree and Robin Jones constructing the track from percussion, electronics, spoken vocals and studio collage. Chris Allison produced, recorded and mixed it with the band, while Fergus Purcell contributed human beatboxing. The track was one of the self-titled album's most overtly dance-oriented experiments, replacing conventional verses and choruses with repetition and stream-of-consciousness vocals. Its deliberately unruly construction reflected the album's divisive break from the more cohesive sound of The Three E.P.'s. The recording remains a distinctive example of the Beta Band's collision of live rhythm, sampling and electronic production. Later critics identified its repetitive dance-rock approach as an early precursor to the sound associated with LCD Soundsystem.
