Recording

Rae & Christian recorded “Spellbound” with Manchester vocalist Veba during the sessions that led to their debut album Northern Sulphuric Soul. Mark Rae and Steve Christian wrote and produced the track, with Veba credited as featured vocalist and co-writer under her name Beverley Green. First issued by Grand Central in 1997 and reworked for the 1998 Northern Sulphuric Soul campaign, it became Rae & Christian’s breakthrough single. The 1998 release reached the UK Official Singles Chart and helped establish the duo as one of Grand Central’s central acts. The track remains one of Rae & Christian’s signature recordings and one of Veba’s best-known vocal features. It stands as a defining early Grand Central single from the Manchester label’s late-1990s crossover period.
