Parrty (Pts. 1 & 2)
Maceo · 1973Recorded in 1973 by Maceo Parker and the Macks, 'Parrty (Pts. 1 & 2)' featured Parker's saxophone playing alongside musicians from James Brown's backing ensemble. Written, produced and arranged by James Brown, the recording was supervised by Fred Wesley and engineered by Bob Both. Originally released as a two-part single on People Records in July 1973, 'Parrty' demonstrated the tightly coordinated rhythms and extended instrumental arrangements associated with James Brown's musical organisation. The recording was subsequently included on Maceo's 1974 album Us, highlighting Parker's work as a bandleader within Brown's circle of musicians. The recording became part of the influential catalogue of James Brown-associated instrumental music, valued by DJs and collectors for its driving rhythms, prominent horns and extended dance-floor arrangement. Its inclusion on the 1995 compilation Funky Good Time: The Anthology helped preserve the recording and introduce Maceo Parker's early work to subsequent generations.
