The Boogie Back

The Boogie Back

Roy Ayers · 1974
Recording

Recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York for the 1974 album Change Up the Groove, the track was produced by Jerry Schoenbaum and engineered by Ron Johnsen. Harry Whitaker composed it and shared arranging credits with Wayne Garfield. Closing Change Up the Groove, it highlighted Ubiquity's emphasis on tightly arranged ensemble playing and rhythm, with keyboards, bass and percussion central to the recording. Its sampled groove helped underpin N.W.A's Fuck tha Police. The recording became a widely reused source for hip-hop producers and a favourite among breakbeat collectors.
