General Confessional
The Electric Prunes · 1968Recorded in 1968 at The Sound Factory in Los Angeles for the Electric Prunes album Release of an Oath. The track was composed and arranged by David Axelrod, with Dave Hassinger credited as producer and session musicians including Dick Whetstone, Howard Roberts, Lou Morrell, Don Randi, Carol Kaye and Earl Palmer. “General Confessional” formed part of Release of an Oath, the Electric Prunes' second large-scale religious concept work after Mass in F Minor. The album continued the unusual collaboration between the Electric Prunes name, producer Dave Hassinger and composer-arranger David Axelrod. The track later gained a second life among collectors and producers through its David Axelrod arrangement and drum-heavy studio sound. It was sampled by the Beatnuts on “Niggaz Know,” helping carry the recording into hip-hop sample culture.
