House Of Rising Funk

The Chubukos · 1973
Recording

Recorded in 1972 by The Chubukos, a studio-based funk ensemble assembled by producer and arranger Amos Heilicher, the track reworked the traditional melody of The House of the Rising Sun into a hard-driving instrumental funk workout. The session emphasized heavy drums, wah-wah guitar, organ and horn arrangements aimed at the growing funk and soul market. Released on the group's sole album A Small Rebellion, the track stood out for its inventive transformation of a well-known folk standard into an aggressive funk instrumental. Although it received little mainstream attention at the time, it became a favorite among DJs and collectors. The recording later achieved cult status through the rare-groove movement and became a sought-after source for hip-hop sampling. Its powerful breakbeat and distinctive arrangement helped establish it as one of the most respected obscurities in 1970s funk.
