Right Place Wrong Time

Dr. John · 1973
Recording

Recorded in 1973 for the album In the Right Place, the track was cut in New Orleans with producer Allen Toussaint and members of The Meters providing much of the instrumental backing. The session paired Dr. John's distinctive vocal style with a tight funk groove and Toussaint's polished arrangements. Released as a single in 1973, it became Dr. John's biggest commercial success and introduced his New Orleans sound to a mainstream audience. The song reached the Top 10 in the United States and helped make In the Right Place his best-selling album. The recording remains one of the defining songs of 1970s New Orleans music and is a staple of classic rock and funk radio. Its groove, lyrics and vocal performance have been widely sampled, covered and referenced across popular culture.
