Funky Kingston

Toots & The Maytals · 1973
Recording

Recorded in 1972 at Dynamic Sounds in Kingston and Island Studios in London during the Funky Kingston sessions, with Toots Hibbert and the Maytals and production by Chris Blackwell, Warwick Lyn, and Dave Bloxham. The track formed part of the original Jamaican and UK album release of Funky Kingston. The title track helped define the album that brought Toots & the Maytals to a wider international audience through Chris Blackwell’s Island/Dragon setup. Contemporary reception treated Funky Kingston as a major critical success for reggae, with the title song standing as one of its signature performances. The song remained a recognizable reggae standard and later turned up in films, video games, and television, including Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Shark Tale, and Miami Ink. Its title also circulated widely in later popular culture as a shorthand for classic Toots & the Maytals reggae.
