That Lady
The Isley Brothers · 1973The 1973 reworking was cut at the Record Plant in Los Angeles, with the expanded Isley Brothers lineup of Ronald, Rudolph, and O'Kelly Isley, plus Ernie Isley, Marvin Isley, and Chris Jasper. Ernie Isley’s guitar became the track’s defining feature, and the session folded the group’s earlier “Who’s That Lady?” into a new funk-rock arrangement. The single anchored the 3 + 3 era and restored the Isley Brothers to the pop Top 10 for the first time since 1969. It also turned the group’s old R&B tune into a crossover hit that linked soul, funk, and rock in a way that suited 1973 radio. “That Lady” became one of the Isley Brothers’ signature recordings and a durable showcase for Ernie Isley’s guitar work. It has remained a frequent source for sampling and a reference point for later funk-rock and soul artists.
