Drum Rock

Lee “Scratch” Perry · 1973
Recording

Recorded in Kingston in 1973 as part of the Upsetters’ dub sessions and mixed by Lee “Scratch” Perry with King Tubby. The track sat in a rhythm-section-heavy session featuring Carlton Barrett on drums, Aston “Family Man” Barrett on bass, Alva “Reggie” Lewis on guitar, Glen Adams and Winston Wright on organ, Gladstone Anderson on piano, and Lee Perry and Noel “Scully” Simms on percussion. It appeared on one of the earliest and most influential dub albums, helping define the genre’s stripped-back, echo-drenched studio aesthetic. Contemporary and later criticism treat the record as a benchmark release in Perry’s career and in dub’s early history. Drum Rock remains part of the core Lee “Scratch” Perry canon and a touchstone for dub producers and listeners. The album has been repeatedly reissued and cited as a foundational statement of Perry’s mixing style and King Tubby collaboration.
