Tell Me Something Good

Tell Me Something Good

Lee “Scratch” Perry · 1978
Recording

Recorded at Black Ark Studio in Kingston, Jamaica, for the 1978 Upsetters album Return of the Super Ape. Lee "Scratch" Perry produced, mixed, and arranged the track, with additional vocals by The Full Experience. The track turned the Rufus hit into a late-Black Ark dub-reggae statement and stood out as one of the album’s most memorable covers. It showed Perry working with familiar American material while pushing his studio sound in a looser, stranger direction. It remains a favored example of Perry’s late-period cover versions and has continued to circulate through reissues and retrospectives. The track is regularly cited as part of the enduring appeal of Return of the Super Ape and Perry’s Black Ark era.
