Pump It Up
Elvis Costello & The Attractions · 1978Recording
Recorded in London at Eden Studios with the Attractions during the This Year's Model sessions. Nick Lowe produced the track, with Roger Bechirian engineering; Costello later noted that the song was cut as one of the album's live basic tracks. Released as the second single from This Year's Model in 1978, it became a UK chart hit and one of Costello's signature songs. Its taut rhythm and sharp lyric made it a defining track of his early period. It has remained one of Costello's best-known songs and a durable part of his live identity. The track's enduring recognition comes from its spare, forceful arrangement and memorable hook.
