Recorded at Roundhouse Studios in London in 1980 during the sessions for I Just Can't Stop It, with Bob Sargeant producing and the Beat performing the track. The original line-up on the recording featured Dave Wakeling, Ranking Roger, Andy Cox, David Steele, Everett Morton, and Saxa. Released as the follow-up single from the band's debut album, it became their defining hit and reached No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart. It also drew strong year-end praise, including a No. 3 placing in NME's tracks of the year for 1980. It remains one of the Beat's signature songs and continued to surface in later compilations and remixes. The track also reached new audiences through films including Grosse Pointe Blank and SLC Punk!, and its enduring popularity was reflected by its UK silver certification.
