Recording

Norma Fraser recorded the song at Jamaica Recording Studio in Kingston with producer C.S. Dodd for the Coxsone/Studio One camp. The release belongs to her late-1960s run of Studio One sides cut with Dodd and associated session musicians. The track recast Aretha Franklin’s song for the Jamaican rocksteady era and fit Studio One’s practice of reworking American soul material for local audiences. It stands as one of Fraser’s best-known solo recordings and one of the label’s notable female vocal cuts. The song has remained a staple on Studio One compilations and in retrospectives of classic Jamaican soul and rocksteady. It continues to circulate as one of Norma Fraser’s signature recordings and as a recognizable Studio One version of a modern standard.
