White Horse
Speng Bond · 2013Recorded for Jahtari’s JTR7-09 7-inch session, with Speng Bond voicing Maffi’s Heidi Riddim and the release pairing his vocal cut with the version on the flip. The Jahtari notes describe it as a warning against riding the “White Horse” and cocaine, set over a minor-key riddim built from the Sleng Teng DNA. It was the lead vocal cut on Jahtari’s Heidi Riddim 7-inch and helped frame the release’s concept of reviving classic digital-dancehall architecture with a darker, bass-heavy twist. The track also fit Speng Bond’s roots-sound-system persona and gave the label a sharp, memorable anti-cocaine toast. White Horse remains one of the best-known Speng Bond cuts in the Jahtari catalog and has continued to circulate through DJ and radio selections, including NTS playlists. Its place on the Heidi Riddim release has kept it tied to Jahtari’s later digital-dancehall archive.
