George Michael · 1990
Recording

George Michael wrote, arranged, and produced the track for Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, recording it in London during the album sessions. It features his self-contained studio performance with the track built around his own vocals and production work. The single announced a sharper, more politically pointed phase of George Michael’s solo career and became one of the defining pop records of 1990. Its stark production and self-reflective lyrics helped establish the album’s break from his Wham! image. The song remains one of George Michael’s signature recordings and is widely remembered for its influential minimalist pop production and iconic video imagery. It continues to appear on greatest-hits compilations and retrospective lists of major 1990s singles.
