John Martyn · 1998
Recording

Recorded during the week-long sessions for The Church with One Bell at CaVa Sound Studios in Glasgow, Martyn's version features John Giblin on bass, Spencer Cozens on keyboards and Arran Ahmun on drums. Norman Dayron and Martyn produced the recording, with Stefon Taylor engineering. Martyn transformed Portishead's song through his weathered vocal delivery, making it a standout on his 1998 covers album. Contemporary coverage in CMJ highlighted how his interpretation turned the lyric into a plea rather than a challenge. The recording remains a celebrated example of Martyn's ability to reshape contemporary material, with AllMusic singling it out as the album's essential performance. Its appearance in the 2011 film Colombiana extended its reach.
