Funky Drummer
James Brown · 1969Recording
Recorded at King Studios in Cincinnati, Ohio, and released by James Brown as a 1969 two-part single. The original issue credits Brown as producer, with the session built around his band’s tight instrumental groove. It became a late-1969 crossover hit for Brown, reaching No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 3 on the R&B chart. The single captured his hard-edged, rhythmic funk style at a moment when that approach was reshaping soul music. The track stayed in Brown’s live repertoire and appeared on later live and compilation releases, which kept it visible to later funk, soul, and hip-hop listeners. It also became a frequent source for covers and sampled references, reinforcing its status as a funk standard.
