Blues & Pants
James Brown · 1971Recorded on July 12, 1971, at Rodel Studios in Washington, D.C., Blues & Pants features James Brown with members of his band, including Bobby Byrd on organ, Fred Wesley on trombone, Fred Thomas on bass, John 'Jabo' Starks on drums, Hearlon 'Cheese' Martin and Robert Coleman on guitars, Jimmy Parker on alto saxophone and St. Clair Pinckney on tenor saxophone. Produced by Brown and written with Wesley, the extended recording opens the album Hot Pants. Released in August 1971, Blues & Pants demonstrated James Brown's increasingly rhythm-centred approach to recording, built around an extended bass-driven groove, interlocking guitar patterns, brass accents and spontaneous vocal exchanges. Its nearly ten-minute arrangement reflected Brown's move towards longer ensemble performances during his early Polydor period. Blues & Pants remains an important example of James Brown's early-1970s recordings, showcasing the rhythmic precision and collective interplay of the musicians associated with the J.B.'s. Its extended instrumental passages and distinctive rhythmic structure have sustained its appeal among funk collectors, DJs and listeners exploring the foundations of breakbeat music.
