Soul II Soul · 1989
Recording

Released as the first single from Vol. II: 1990 – A New Decade, the track featured Marcia Lewis on lead vocals and was produced by Jazzie B and Nellee Hooper. The single version reworked the album cut for release in late 1989. The song extended Soul II Soul’s late-1980s UK breakthrough and reached No. 3 on the Official Singles Chart. Contemporary reviews praised its blend of rap, soul, and dance elements, and it sold over 200,000 copies in the UK. It remains one of Soul II Soul’s signature singles and a clear example of the group’s rap-soul-dance crossover sound. Its continuing profile rests on its chart success and its place in the band’s best-known early run of hits.
