Fools Gold
The Stone Roses · 1989Recorded at Sawmills studio in Cornwall in late summer 1989, with production by John Leckie. The track was built from a loop-based demo and assembled with John Squire, Ian Brown, Mani, and Reni during the band’s post-debut sessions. Released as a double A-side with “What the World Is Waiting For,” it became the Stone Roses’ first UK top-ten single and a defining Madchester-era crossover between guitar music and club culture. It peaked at number 8 on the UK Singles Chart and spent 14 weeks in the top 75. “Fools Gold” became one of the band’s signature recordings and a touchstone for later dance-rock and breakbeat-influenced acts. It also remained a reference point for samplers and later artists drawn to its drum loop, groove, and crossover appeal.
