Soul II Soul · 1989
Recording

Recorded in 1988 at Britannia Row Studios in London. The single was produced by Jazzie B and Nellee Hooper, and Caron Wheeler was added to Soul II Soul’s lineup after the session. Released in March 1989 as the second single from Club Classics Vol. One, it became one of Soul II Soul’s breakthrough records. It reached No. 5 in the UK and became a major crossover hit, topping three Billboard charts in the United States. The track has remained a defining example of late-1980s British dance-soul, with major retrospective recognition from Q, Mixmag, BBC Radio, and The Daily Telegraph. It is still cited as a classic dance record and a key early statement of Soul II Soul’s sound.
