Children's Story
Slick Rick · 1989Recording
Recorded in 1988 for The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, with Slick Rick writing and producing the track himself. It was issued as the album’s second single in 1989 and reflects the same storytelling approach that defined his debut era. The single became the biggest hit from The Great Adventures of Slick Rick and a top-five rap and R&B record, helping turn Slick Rick into hip-hop’s signature narrative storyteller. Critics and later retrospectives have treated it as one of the defining rap singles of its era. The song remains one of hip-hop’s most frequently sampled and cited storytelling records, with later artists drawing on its hook and structure. It also crossed into other media through a 2017 illustrated children’s-book adaptation.
