Nautilus
Bob James · 1974Recorded between February and April 1974 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, 'Nautilus' was composed and arranged by Bob James under producer Creed Taylor. The recording features James on keyboards, Gary King on bass, Idris Muhammad on drums and Ralph MacDonald on percussion, with engineering by Rudy Van Gelder. Released in 1974 as the closing track on Bob James' album One, 'Nautilus' demonstrated the atmospheric keyboard arrangements and distinctive rhythmic production of Creed Taylor's CTI Records. Its hypnotic bassline, synthesised textures and spacious percussion distinguished it from the album's orchestral arrangements and subsequently attracted considerable attention from hip-hop producers. 'Nautilus' became one of the most extensively sampled jazz recordings in hip-hop history, providing musical foundations for tracks by Run-DMC, Eric B. & Rakim, Ghostface Killah and numerous other artists. Its distinctive bassline, keyboard phrases and drum patterns established the recording as a cornerstone of hip-hop production and an enduring favourite among DJs and record collectors.
