Shamboozie
Bob James · 1982Recorded in New York City and White Plains, New York, during the 1982 sessions for Bob James' album Hands Down. James played Fender Rhodes and synthesizers alongside Marcus Miller on bass, John Robinson on drums, Steve Khan on guitar, Leonard 'Doc' Gibbs Jr. on percussion and Jay Beckenstein on alto saxophone, with Joe Jorgensen engineering and mixing. Released in 1982 as the third track on Hands Down, 'Shamboozie' showcased Bob James' use of electronic keyboards alongside an accomplished rhythm section and extensive horn arrangements. The recording featured prominent contributions from Marcus Miller and Jay Beckenstein during a period when James was incorporating increasingly electronic instrumentation into his productions. The recording gained renewed recognition through its use as a sample in Rakim's 1997 single 'Guess Who's Back', from his debut solo album The 18th Letter. Its subsequent rediscovery reinforced Bob James' influence on sample-based hip-hop production and the continuing appeal of his early-1980s recordings.
