Gee Dee

Gary Davis & Chocolate Star · 1982
Recording

Gee Dee was recorded by Camden, New Jersey-based keyboardist, arranger and producer Gary Davis with musicians from his local circle. An instrumental composition inspired by jazz pianist Joe Sample, it formed part of Davis's independent Chocolate Star recordings from the early 1980s. Originally issued on Gary Davis & His Professor's untitled Chocolate Star LP, Gee Dee showcased Davis's keyboard-driven arrangements and independent production approach. Its synthesizer textures and rhythmic groove reflected the experimental dance music emerging from the New Jersey underground. Gee Dee gained renewed exposure through the 2006 compilation Chocolate Star: The Very Best of Gary Davis, curated by Kenny Dope, which included the original recording and an alternate mix. Its rediscovery helped preserve Davis's reputation among collectors and listeners exploring the origins of hip-hop and house music.
