You're Getting a Little Too Smart

Detroit Emeralds · 1973
Recording

Recorded in 1973 by the Detroit Emeralds, the track was produced and written by the group's leader Abrim Tilmon. The session featured the polished blend of soul harmonies, funk rhythms and orchestral arrangements that characterized the group's Westbound-era recordings. Released during the peak of the Detroit Emeralds' commercial success, the recording showcased the group's ability to balance socially observant lyrics with danceable grooves. It reinforced their position as one of the leading soul groups operating outside the Motown system. The track became a respected deep cut among rare-groove collectors and was later discovered by hip-hop producers searching for obscure soul and funk recordings. It remains representative of the sophisticated songwriting and production style that distinguished the Detroit Emeralds in the early 1970s.
