La Di Da Di
Slick Rick · 1985Recording
Released in 1985 as the B-side to Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew’s single “The Show,” the track paired Doug E. Fresh’s beatboxing with MC Ricky D’s rap performance. It was produced by Dennis Bell and Ollie Cotton for City Slicker Productions. At release, it stood out for its stark, voice-and-beatbox construction and for pushing hip-hop storytelling forward. It quickly became an influential party record and later received recognition from the Library of Congress for its cultural importance. The track remains one of the most sampled and referenced recordings in popular music. Its lines and rhythm have echoed through later hip-hop and pop records, helping define the template for countless interpolations and homages.
